Welcome to Hanover

Hanover County, Virginia, established on November 26, 1720, is steeped in American history and tradition. Named in honor of King George I, who was Elector of Hanover in Germany before ascending the British throne, the county was carved out from New Kent County along the boundaries of St. Paul's Parish.

The county is renowned as the birthplace of Patrick Henry, the "Orator of the Revolution" and Virginia's first governor. Born in 1736 at Studley plantation, Henry gained prominence for his compelling arguments in the Parson's Cause case at the historic Hanover Courthouse, a structure believed to have been constructed between 1737 and 1743 and still in public use today. Nearby, the Hanover Tavern, dating back to around 1723, served as a significant social and political hub during colonial times.

Scotchtown, another historical gem in Hanover County, was Patrick Henry's residence from 1771 to 1778. It was here that he prepared his famous "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech. The plantation is also noted as the girlhood home of Dolley Madison, wife of President James Madison.

The county also played a pivotal role in the advancement of religious freedom. The Polegreen Church, established in 1743, was one of the first non-Anglican churches in Virginia. Under the leadership of Reverend Samuel Davies, it became a center for the Great Awakening, influencing notable figures like Patrick Henry.

During the Civil War, Hanover County was the site of significant battles, including the Seven Days Battles and the Battle of Cold Harbor, due to its strategic location near Richmond.

Today, Hanover County seamlessly blends its rich historical heritage with modern development. Its well-preserved landmarks, combined with vibrant communities and scenic landscapes, offer residents and visitors a unique glimpse into America's past while providing the amenities of the present.
