Named after Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, the county was formed from parts of Henrico County. Its geographical boundaries are primarily defined by the James River to the north and the Appomattox River to the south.

Long before English settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years. In 1611, English colonists established the "Citie of Henricus" within present-day Chesterfield, marking the second permanent English settlement in the New World.

Chesterfield County is renowned for several historical firsts in North America:

- First Commercial Cultivation of Tobacco: The county played a pivotal role in the early tobacco industry, contributing significantly to the colony's economy.

- First Ironworks: In 1619, the Falling Creek Ironworks was established, marking the inception of the iron industry in the New World.

- First Commercially Mined Coal: The Midlothian area became a hub for coal mining in the early 18th century, supplying fuel to various regions, including the White House during Thomas Jefferson's presidency.

These industries spurred the development of infrastructure, including Virginia's first paved road, the Manchester Turnpike in 1807, and the Chesterfield Railroad in 1831, enhancing transportation of coal to the port of Manchester.
